Elen tells the girl stories about the Tuath Dé and their treasures. In Ystrad Tywi, an unnamed girl lives with her mother Elen. It also draws heavily on Celtic and European mythos. According to a review in Strange Horizons, the Welsh orthography of several characters' names, including Gwenhwyfar and Myrddyn, conjure a "Celtic Arthur", providing a geographic explanation for the presence of the Irish Tuath Dé. The book draws on Arthurian mythos, but makes the character of Percival a woman. It uses a similar setting, being placed in a region corresponding to Northumbria, during a period in which the English were being converted to Christianity. Griffith wrote Spear while taking time off of writing a sequel to her 2013 novel Hild. The idea for the book originally came about after Griffith was invited to contribute to Sword Stone Table, an anthology of Arthurian retellings from Swapna Krishna and Jenn Northington. It is a queer feminist retelling of the myth of Percival and the Holy Grail. Spear is a 2022 fantasy novella by Nicola Griffith.

This might be the end of Alex’s story, but it’s also the beginning of the book. If it sounds like I’ve given too much away already, don’t worry. When he is called in for questioning, he calmly admits to cultivating the one hundred and thirteen grams of marijuana that have been found in the car’s glove pocket. Alex has a minor epileptic fit, declares himself unfit to drive, and then sits silently conjugating irregular Spanish verbs while he waits to be interrogated by the police. A customs controller has just shone a torch on the passenger seat, only to find an urn containing the remains of said car’s owner. He’s seventeen years old and sitting at the wheel of Mr Peterson’s car at Dover after a hasty round trip to Zurich.

Hank accuses the church for shoring up the ills of the sixth century society: superstition hereditary nobility social inequality the meek subservience of the masses to authority and tradition. He states that "the established church is only a political machine," bereft of the spiritual functions that it purports to serve. Twain's Yankee's greatest fear and ultimate enemy is the Roman Catholic Church, which to him embodies the evils of manipulating religion for political purposes. Within this context several topics and themes recur: The Church Just as the mythic King Arthur embodies his age, the age of romantic chivalry, Hank Morgan is a type figure of the nineteenth century man "nearly barren of sentiment," freedom minded, shrewd and technocratic. A Connecticut Yankee derives its brilliance, its humor and its themes from one source: a juxtaposition of times and its attendant values. London Country centres on familiar characters from those earlier novels, their personal crises and brushes with the judicial system, collapsing healthcare and occasionally boss sounds on tape and vinyl. London Country (London Books, 2023) is a familiar canter through King’s authorly hinterland of West London (“Herbert Manor”), not only spliced and infused with more punk references than you could shake a mic stand at but revisiting three of his most popular and successful ‘cycle’ novels, Human Punk, White Trash and Skinheads. It’s fair to say you’ve made it in your writing career when your books are as anticipated as those of John King ( The Football Factory), who as the saying goes needs no introduction to any sussed reader (though this is a good start). “It is that trip where we met an AMAZING neurologist,” Jen said. Rachel was admitted again to the hospital, this time for eleven days, away from Ashbrook High School. Fast forward a month and despite treatments, the migraine was worse. The initial diagnosis of Dysautonomia (she does not have POTS) was given. This 17-year-old from Dallas, in Gaston County, was initially admitted to her local hospital for a short stay. October 2020 turned out to be the beginning of a very long and continuous medical journey for Rachel.” “Or, maybe COVID isolation was getting to her, or the stress of virtual school. “I thought initially she just needed sun,” Jen said. That’s why in October 2020, as COVID still blanketed our world, Jen was thrown when her teenaged daughter’s headache turned to an intense migraine and wouldn’t go away. The reason for this union is none other than his father’s personal gain, according to Christy, evidenced by Old Mahon’s judgment of him as not worthy of the Widow (2.125-127, 137). Christy’s motivation for doing so, explained in a noticeably more dramatic version of the tale later in the play, is to avoid an arranged marriage with the Widow Casey who is a woman significantly older and larger than Christy and ‘of noted misbehaviour with the old and young’ (2.116-120). Nothing that either Pegeen or Shawn attempt in the play is remotely comparable to his crime of patricide. Each relationship represents a different gradient of resistance to paternal oppression, with Christy demonstrating significant defiance. In Playboy there are three child-father relations for examination: Christy and Old Mahon, Pegeen Mike and Michael Flaherty (Michael James), and Shawn Keogh and Father Reilly. |
