In reading this book, I gained knowledge about a painful piece of our nation's history that is barely mentioned in American History courses, and the emotions multiplied with every page that I read. Message from Nam starts with a poem entitled "The Boys Who Fought in Nam" and from those very first few pages and the powerful message contained in those lines, I was emotionally invested in this book. But for her and the men who fought in Viet Nam, life would never be the same again. Sergeant Tony Campobello had come to Vietnam from the streets of New York to vent a rage that had followed him all the way to Saigon.įor seven years Paxton Andrews would write an acclaimed newspaper column from the front before finally returning to the States and then attending the Paris peace talks. Bill Quinn, captain of the Cu Chi tunnel rats, was on his fourth tour of duty and it seemed nothing could touch him. Ralph Johnson, a seasoned AP correspondent, had been in Saigon since the beginning. Peter Wilson, fresh from law school, was a new recruit who would confont his fate in Da Nang. For the men in her life, Viet Nam would change their lives in ways hey could not escape or deny. We follow her from high school in Savannah to college in Berkeley and then to work in Saigon.įor the soldiers she knew and met there, Viet Nam would change their lives in ways they could never have imagined. As a journalist, Paxton Andrews would experience Vietnam firsthand.

McConaughey does an impeccable movie-star turn as Jake Brigance, the most ambitious and talented attorney in tiny Canton, Miss., and doubtless has a lucrative career ahead of him, but in the acting department he is the runner-up. If nothing else, Schumacher’s love for unalloyed shamelessness is sincere and that gives “A Time to Kill” a core watchability that many other commercial projects lack.ĭespite what you’ve been reading, it’s not Matthew McConaughey, the hunky young actor with a profile like a Roman coin, who is the key to “A Time to Kill’s” success. While the director’s relish for pushing every button within reach is excessive, you have to shake your head and admire the jaw-dropping effrontery of the attempt. Still, being anything but bemused at “A Time to Kill’s” antics is as pointless as getting angry at an infant who misbehaves. It’s hard to think of another director who could make Grisham’s pulp fiction look restrained by comparison, but Schumacher manages. Not trusting even the best-selling novel’s instincts, Schumacher and screenwriter Goldsman, determined to squeeze the maximum possible impact out of situations, have made several small but critical changes in the plot, including putting a key closing speech in a different character’s mouth. With full throttle as his cruising speed of choice, Schumacher directs as if nuance were a capital offense. It is important to help addicted persons to connect with their image of their ideal future self, and restore their self-worth. However, change is sometimes set in motion when they can believe that a better life is possible for them, and that they are worth this change for the better. They often find themselves in a very deprived situation, with very little means to change their lives. The image on the front visualizes the situation many chronic substance dependent people face. This insight into the importance of normative self-control became apparent during the longitudinal qualitative interviews I had with people dependent on alcohol, opioids and amphetamines. We need to look at their self-concept and narrative understanding as well because this determines whether they will use their capacities. We cannot judge whether someone has impaired self-control solely by looking at the capacities they possess. However, the current theories are incomplete because they largely stay silent on how normative agency is impaired in addiction. I will argue that the current theories provide very valuable information on many of the challenges substance users face when exercising intentional or instrumental self-control. I propose a hierarchical account that shows how the current, seemingly conflicting, theories on addiction and self-control relate to each other. In this thesis I examine the various ways in which self-control can be impaired in addiction, and how self-control can be restored. Addiction is often seen as synonymous with losing self-control. A gruff, buff mall Santa? What elf could refuse? Well sweet and dorky Hunter sure can’t. I can’t think of a nicer way to start off the holiday season. These characters are so engaging, and the story is sexy and sweet. And when Cole turns out to be a little bit dommy, well it's even better! Santa Daddy Keira Andrews always knows how to spin a tale, and Santa Daddy hooked me from the very first scene. In Case of Emergency Loved this story when I read it, it's even better when read by Kirt Graves. Eight Nights in December I'm so glad I finally got around to this one! It's a great story, really sweet and very clever. Review for the Audio Edition of Keira Andrews' Gay Romance Holiday Collection performed by the marvelous Kirt Graves. Lovely Stories, Fantastic Performance by K. Her daughter’s involvement in a case of unfair dismissal involving gay colleagues from the university where she works is similarly strange to her.Īnd yet when the care home where she works insists that she lower her standard of care for an elderly dementia patient who has no family, who travelled the world as a successful diplomat, who chose not to have children, Green’s mother cannot accept it. When an ageing mother allows her thirty-something daughter to move into her apartment, she wants for her what many mothers might say they want for their child: a steady income, and, even better, a good husband with a good job with whom to start a family.īut when Green turns up with her girlfriend, Lane, in tow, her mother is unprepared and unwilling to welcome Lane into her home. Fallon sets the stage for another lively fantasy saga full of intriguing characters, smart dialogue and twisty plotting. With his help, Marla grows from a mere pawn to one of the most powerful women in Hythria. She gives the reader an almost perfect mixture of fantasy and politics Warrior, second book in the Wolfblade Trilogy, is an excellent example. Fortunately, Marla finds a helpful adviser in the clever dwarf Elezaar, whose former lord was assassinated by Patriots. 576 pages July 2007 I've been a fan of Jennifer Fallon's since I first picked up one of her books, and I've grabbed every one of her new novels almost as soon as they have been published. Marla's upcoming wedding to King Hablet of Fardohnya will give Lernen access to Hablet's armies, in case of attack from neighboring Medalon they'll also come in handy to make the Warlords of Hythria toe the line and to withstand attacks from members of the Hythrian "Patriot" faction disgusted by Lernen's hedonistic lifestyle. Though not yet 16, Lady Marla Wolfblade, sister to Lernen, the High Prince of Hythria, is a valuable piece in a vast political chess game. The first book of Fallon's new trilogy showcases the Australian writer's skill at dramatizing the convoluted schemes and backstabbing of king making and power politics. However much as a publisher or as a writer you love it when books win prizes or sell well, in the long run the value of books is really in the experience of reading them. The thing is, books aren't really a competition. What are the challenges when a series of books become such a success? Can other books compete? There was genuine love and excitement for the story and while it’s true that Bloomsbury didn’t pay an awful lot for it, nobody did for children’s books back then! And I guess what people thought of as a successful first children's book then, was nothing like what actually happened. Nigel took the three chapters he was given home and gave them to his 8-year-old daughter who wrote him a note saying she wanted to read the rest straightaway. But before they acquired it, the book had to get past a meeting which was chaired by our founder and chief executive, Nigel Newton. I wasn't there at the time, but I do know that there was a palpable excitement about the book. But it's not true to say that Bloomsbury weren’t ambitious for it. There are many legends about Harry Potter's origins, like it being turned down by 12 publishers and then arriving at Bloomsbury. In 1997, when the first book was published, most big publishers liked having a children's division but no one had significant commercial expectations of it. The books weren't expected to be a hit at the time, why was that? What was the publishing landscape like at the time? Suddenly the publication of a book was made into an event.Ĭhildren's books as a field is now so full of talent, and there's a new generation of writers coming through, who were the original Potter fans, whose love of books and reading is shaped by that extraordinary experience. No one knew what was going to happen in those books and they were waiting for the next one. For that first generation of readers who grew up with it, they were experiencing it completely new. The other important and wonderful effect is the magic of reading the books themselves and the effect they have on their readers. Obviously it's not the only thing that's responsible for that, but I do think Harry Potter created a paradigm shift that made it possible. In 1998 there were around 34 million children's books sold, by 2016 that was 64 million, so that's a very palpable Harry Potter effect. One of those is the numbers from UK Bookscan. It's hard to pin down exactly, but there are some really concrete effects. It's probably more accurate to talk about the effects plural. What do people mean when they talk about "The Harry Potter Effect"?
